My spouse has early-stage Alzheimer's. He was capable of staying home alone for several hours at a time but had to have meds and food presented to him. He was totally unresponsive, had no interest in ANYTHING other than going out to eat, was totally withdrawn, slept very late, stayed in his pajamas, and stared at the ceiling or floor. I initially took him to Chenal as a respite for me. I thought he would object since he preferred the security of our house. The socialization has been great for him! The atmosphere is so homey; the staff is so warm and caring and gives each client such individualized attention that he loved it from the beginning! While there is no cure for his affliction, his behavior has improved dramatically. He participates in group activities as best he can- painting objects, working jigsaw puzzles, playing Bingo, etc. He is a musician but has not touched the keys during the past couple of years. He isn't playing like he did before Alzheimer's, but he HAS sat before a keyboard and played a little music.
I had resisted taking him to adult day care before Chenal opened- even though Alzheimer's Arkansas had recommended I do so. He now goes every day and it is great for both of us! I highly recommend it to anyone who has a loved one who needs personalized attention during the day. Nancy A Davis Little Rock, AR July 17, 2006
I'm so grateful for Chenal Adult Day Services. The staff is caring and the center is cheerful. I know my husband will be well cared for during the day and most important; my husband enjoys going there each day.Kathy Lavender July 7, 2006
